What is Photoluminescent? 

Photoluminescence is a process that occurs in substances that can store energy when exposed to natural or artificial light. During this process, the atoms of the photoluminescent material are excited by the incidence of light, causing the electrons to move to a higher energy level. When the light source is turned off, the electrons return to lower energy levels and light is emitted.

For what Photoluminescent materials are used?

Photoluminescent materials are used in applications across a wide range of industries, with a focus on safety and the protection of human life. In buildings, tunnels, aircraft, ships, and other facilities, photoluminescent safety signs and markings are essential in situations of power failure and especially in emergencies. In these conditions, photoluminescent safety signs are often the only way to communicate hazards and provide emergency instructions, allowing occupants to reach safety and rescue locations.

For many years the maritime industry has recognized the importance of photoluminescent materials, particularly photoluminescent maritime safety signs.

How is photoluminescence (Luminance) measured?

Luminance is a measure of the amount of light emitted by a material. Luminance can also be said to quantify the brightness emitted by a surface. The Iunit of luminance is milicandela per square metre(mcd/m²).

To measure the luminance of a photoluminescence material, it is necessary to perform a luminance test, which must follow measurement protocols defined by national and international standards. All tests have two phases in common: the first phase involves exposing the product to a specified light source at a specified illuminance for a specified period; the second phase takes place in the absence of light and involves measuring the amount of energy released by the surface of the material over time.

The luminance shall be determined by a luminance meter calibrated to measure, also known as a photometer and it shall have the characteristics required by the applicable test protocols.

Why is it important to use Photoluminescent materials in the maritime sector?

Photoluminescent signs are extensively used in the marine sector due to their reliability and effectiveness in enhancing safety and visibility on vessels and maritime structures. In the event of power failures or emergencies, such as fires or flooding, traditional lighting systems may become compromised, posing significant risks to crew members and passengers.

Photoluminescent signs, however, provide a reliable backup solution, emitting light without the need of electricity or batteries. These signs illuminate critical areas such as escape routes, lifeboat stations, emergency equipment, and evacuation pathways, guiding individuals to safety even in low-light or dark conditions. Their self-sustaining nature ensures continuous visibility, aiding in swift and orderly evacuation procedures.
